BirdMap Web Map and Web Feature Services
Some of BSC's data holdings are available as Web Map (WMS) and Web Feature (WFS) services. Simply put, Web Map Services expose data layers to the Internet in a non-proprietary format so that they can be plugged into online mapping portals and desktop GIS software that support the WMS standard. Similarly, Web Feature Services expose the underlying data (including geographic data and attribute data) in an interoperable format that allows query and data extraction.
To find out which layers are available from Bird Studies Canada, capabilities documents can be accessed for both WMS and WFS. Note that when you access the capabilities links, you may be asked to open a file or save it to your computer. If this happens, save the document with a .txt extension and then view it with a text editor. Also note that the number of records returned by an individual query has been limited because of performance issues. Full datasets are available for download as zip archives here.
Bird Studies Canada gratefully acknowledges the support of Environment Canada and Natural Resources Canada (GeoConnections) in developing this service.
