About the CBC4Kids

Like the traditional Christmas Bird Count, the Christmas Bird Count for Kids gathers birdwatchers for a bird count, and provides valuable winter bird population data for bird conservation. But the CBC4Kids begins with an introduction and mini-workshops on Binocular Basics and Bird Identification, to prepare young and new birders for an enjoyable counting experience.

Following the presentations, experienced birders lead small birding teams (youth participants and their parents) on birding excursions for 1-2 hours. Once the surveys are complete, all teams gather to tally bird observations and share highlights of their birding adventures. The results are submitted to eBird Canada and shared with the CBC4Kids National Database (username: CBC4KCanada).

The first CBC4Kids was established in 2007 in Sonoma Valley, California by Tom Rusert and Darren Peterie of Sonoma Birding. This successful annual event is now conducted across North America. Bird Studies Canada has been the proud Canadian partner in this exciting Citizen Science program since 2010.
